How to Calculate Your GPA (Grade Point Average)
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standard metric used by colleges, universities, and high schools across the United States and internationally to evaluate overall academic performance. GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade point value of each letter grade by the number of credit hours for that course, adding those quality points together, and dividing by the total number of credits attempted.
Standard 4.0 GPA Grade Conversion Scale
Most universities and high schools follow this standard 4.0 numerical grade conversion scale:
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | Standard 4.0 Scale | Honors (+0.5) | AP / IB / College (+1.0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97% – 100% | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A | 93% – 96% | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A- | 90% – 92% | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
| B+ | 87% – 89% | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
| B | 83% – 86% | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| B- | 80% – 82% | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
| C+ | 77% – 79% | 2.3 | 2.8 | 3.3 |
| C | 73% – 76% | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| C- | 70% – 72% | 1.7 | 2.2 | 2.7 |
| D+ | 67% – 69% | 1.3 | 1.8 | 2.3 |
| D | 63% – 66% | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
| F | 0% – 59% | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA: What is the Difference?
An unweighted GPAevaluates all coursework on a standard 0.0 to 4.0 scale regardless of class difficulty. An "A" in an introductory elective equals 4.0 points, and an "A" in Advanced Placement (AP) Physics also equals 4.0 points.
A weighted GPA rewards students who tackle more rigorous academics by adding extra points:
- Honors Courses: typically add +0.5 points (an A is worth 4.5).
- Advanced Placement (AP) & International Baccalaureate (IB): typically add +1.0 point (an A is worth 5.0).
- Dual-Enrollment College Courses: typically receive the full +1.0 point weight.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How is college GPA calculated?
Multiply the grade point value of each letter grade (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0) by the course credit hours to get quality points. Sum all quality points and divide by the total number of credit hours attempted.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA calculates all courses on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale regardless of rigor. Weighted GPA awards extra points for challenging courses: typically +0.5 points for Honors classes and +1.0 point for AP and IB courses (up to a 5.0 scale).
How do I calculate cumulative GPA from past semesters?
Multiply your prior cumulative GPA by your prior credits to find past quality points. Add your new semester quality points, then divide by the sum of prior credits plus new semester credits.
What GPA is required for Latin graduation honors?
At most universities, Cum Laude requires a 3.50–3.69 GPA, Magna Cum Laude requires a 3.70–3.89 GPA, and Summa Cum Laude requires a 3.90–4.00 GPA.
