How Credit Card Processing Fees Work

Payment processors charge a combination of a percentage fee and a fixed transaction fee. For instance, Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful domestic card charge, while PayPal charges 3.49% + $0.49 for standard checkout.

The Reverse Invoice Formula ("How much should I charge?"):

If you want to receive an exact net amount in your bank account, you cannot simply add 2.9% to your invoice, because the processor will deduct 2.9% from that higher total. The mathematically correct formula is:

Invoice Amount = (Target Net + Fixed Fee) / (1 - Percentage Fee Rate)

Example: To receive exactly $1,000 via Stripe (2.9% + $0.30):
Invoice Amount = ($1,000 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $1,000.30 / 0.971 = $1,030.18.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I just add 2.9% to my invoice?

Because the payment processor deducts their percentage from the total charged, not your original subtotal. Adding 2.9% still leaves you short. The mathematically correct formula is (Target + Fixed Fee) / (1 - Percentage Rate).

Does this calculator support international card surcharges?

Yes, you can toggle international card processing or cross-border fees to see the additional 1% to 1.5% assessment.

Are my financial figures stored or logged?

Never. All calculations run strictly in your browser using JavaScript. No transaction data is sent to our servers.
